Lesson 1 of 4

What is a stablecoin?

A stablecoin is a digital asset designed to hold a steady value, almost always $1. Where bitcoin's price moves with the market, a stablecoin's entire job is to not move. That makes it useful for the same things dollars are useful for: paying, settling, and storing value, but with the speed and programmability of a blockchain.

Think of it as a digital dollar that can move 24/7, settle in seconds, and be programmed like software. That combination of dollar stability and blockchain rails is why payment networks and banks are building with stablecoins rather than volatile cryptocurrencies.
